On Upwork, you can earn high paying, high-quality clients by implementing the right strategies. With the right practical wisdom, you can definitely build a successful freelancing machine that will bring you clients without much effort.

So, if you are a new freelancer and are wondering what Upwork is and how to earn money from it, this post is for you.

What is Upwork? how does it work

Upwork is an online freelance marketplace. Clients post their projects on the platform in search of freelancers to complete them. Freelancers can use the platform to find new clients and earn money.

Upwork’s main competitors are Freelancer.com and Fiverr. However, as of this writing, Upwork is the largest freelance marketplace on the internet.

If we take a look at Upwork’s profile, it can be said that it is the world’s largest online job marketplace, where 3.5 million jobs are posted annually, with a total worth of $1 billion US dollars. Upwork has around 10 million registered freelancers and 4.5 million registered clients. Clients can use the Upwork platform to interact with, hire, and work with freelancers. The company has a real-time chat platform which makes it easy for clients to search for freelancers and receive their services. The company also eliminates any time zones and geographical barriers, making it easy for clients to reach freelancers from all over the world.

Posting a job on Upwork is free for clients. Freelancers don’t have to pay anything to apply for the jobs posted by clients. However, Upwork charges a 10% fee on the freelancer’s earnings as a commission. This means that freelancers are not deprived of any income other than this commission. Upwork’s escrow system ensures that freelancers are paid after 6 days of the completion of the job. Payments can be made via PayPal, credit cards or bank accounts. Upwork also encourages the use of its time tracking system.

Upwork’s time tracking feature allows freelancers to track the time spent on a job and take screenshots to prove the work done, this ensures that there is no bias in billing for the job done. Upwork offers a time tracking app for Windows, OS X and Linux. Additionally, it also has a mobile app for Android and iOS. All these tools are free to use and easy to access on Upwork. These tools are one of the reasons why many freelancers and clients prefer to use Upwork.

How to Apply in Upwork?

Joining Upwork is a very simple process. To create a profile on Upwork, a person needs to go through the initial stages provided by Upwork. After completing all the provided stages by Upwork, the person’s profile will be 100% complete. It takes around 4-5 hours for a person to complete this task and then they have to take a series of tests on their skills. It’s very important for a person to complete their profile by including information about their work history, skills, passing Upwork tests, and including a portfolio. All these steps are very important to make the profile 100% complete. To search for new job opportunities, the person has to write a cover letter.

It is very common in the job market to copy and paste a single cover letter for multiple job positions. A truly personalized cover letter can make a significant impact in helping a new freelancer to get their foot in the door for a few initial interviews. It is advisable to avoid copying and pasting to avoid any issues.

The cover letter should be custom-made. If someone is new, then links to previous work (if available) should be included. For a new candidate, it is better to speak in small positions with less detail. The point is that only after speaking can a new candidate get a job. It may be frustrating to wait for a job, but it is important to maintain hope and patience.

Reason for Upwork Account Suspended

Sometimes accounts on Odesk/Upwork become disabled. This is due to various reasons.

  • One of the main reasons for account disabling on Odesk/Upwork is failure to maintain high standards of work quality. If a freelancer is not delivering work on time or if clients are not satisfied with the delivered work for a long period of time, the freelancer may be deemed as an inadequate performer. Poor communication can also be considered as poor performance.
  • Plagiarism and cheating, such as submitting someone else’s work as your own and falsely claiming authorship, are considered violations of Odesk/Upwork’s terms of service and general policies.
  • Plagiarism and cheating is another reason for disabling a freelancer’s account on Odesk/Upwork. It is a violation of the platform’s policies. The account remains limited until the user rectifies the violation and provides assurance that it will not happen again. In case of severe violations, the account may not be reactivated. Harassment and abuse are also considered as severe violations.
  • Harassment and abuse, such as bullying, extortion, and severe misconduct, are considered severe violations on Upwork. They are taken very seriously and may result in account suspension or permanent termination. Such activities also put other users’ accounts and financial transactions at risk.

Therefore, it is important to understand Odesk/Upwork’s rules and regulations correctly, in order to avoid account disabling, which can result in financial loss.

How does it work?

Upwork makes it easy for freelancers and clients to connect with each other. This relationship can manifest in two forms.

  • Freelancers can browse through job listings posted by clients and apply for the ones that match their skills and interests. They can also submit proposals to clients in response to their job postings, expressing their interest and qualifications for the job.
  • Clients can create job postings and invite freelancers to apply for the job based on their profile and qualifications. They can search for freelancers and reach out to them directly, either through the platform’s search features or by viewing their profiles.

After signing up and setting up your profile, you will need to verify your account with Upwork. This will include providing proof of your identity and completing any additional steps required by the platform. Once your account is verified, you will be able to access the full range of features and start finding or posting jobs on the platform.

As Upwork becomes more popular among freelancers, it becomes increasingly competitive for freelancers to be accepted by clients. This competition can lead to issues such as more intense bidding, and more disputes.

Once you have signed up, been verified, and are ready to begin searching for jobs, Upwork functions as a tool to guide you through the entire process of freelancing, from finding and applying for job listings to managing your ongoing projects and getting paid.

It is important (and necessary) to complete each step of the process on the platform for every job you take on.

Freelancers and clients can communicate directly and securely with each other through the platform’s messaging system, both before, during and after the contract, which ensures easy and prompt communication.

You will also be able to securely share files and receive payments on the platform for your work. After the contract is completed, both you and the client can leave feedback for each other.

Feedback is a section on Upwork where both freelancers and clients can rate and provide comments on each other’s work, performance, and communication. It helps to establish trust and credibility on the platform, and also helps future clients or freelancers to make informed decisions when working with that particular individual.

Leaving feedback on the platform is one of the best ways to establish your reputation on Upwork, which can lead to more clients wanting to work with you. However, as you can imagine, issues and misunderstandings can arise, so freelancers must make an effort to maintain good ratings in order to avoid negative consequences.

Yes, if everything goes well, and if you both agree, you and the client can easily rehire each other on the platform and continue working together.

Your Upwork profile

To be successful on the platform, you may want to fully complete and improve your profile. When clients search for services, they will be more likely to be ready to work with you if your profile is well-done and reflects your skills and qualifications.

And having clients approach you for projects gives you enough time and ability to select the projects that best suit you.

You can create a comprehensive profile on Upwork by uploading a profile picture, selecting your skills and job titles, writing a summary about your services, and including your work experience, education, certifications, and skills. It is important to make sure your profile is complete and showcases your qualifications and skills to attract clients.

One of the best techniques for success on the platform is to make sure your profile is fully filled out, keeping in mind your target client throughout the process. For example, write your title and summary using words that clearly convey how you can solve the client’s problems.

Once you start creating your profile on the platform, it becomes the place where clients will see your past reviews, in addition to your qualifications, availability, and potential to succeed in the job they are hiring for.

Why do People Choose Upwork Freelancing?

Many people choose freelancing as a career option beyond just fulfilling basic needs. One of the main reasons for this is the flexibility it offers. With freelancing, there is no requirement to stick to a specific schedule or work at a specific time of day. Instead, freelancers can choose to take on projects that fit their schedule and availability. According to statistics, 78% of freelancers say that they make more money in a year or less by freelancing than they would with a traditional job. Therefore, earning more money is also a significant reason for choosing freelancing as a career.

Freelancing has become more popular and easier with the rise of online platforms like Upwork. People can easily find and apply to freelance jobs without the need to go through a traditional job search process. The platform also allows freelancers to work on their own schedule, without the need to be tied to a specific work schedule. One of the main reasons people choose freelancing is the flexibility it offers, allowing them to balance work with other responsibilities

Upwork for freelancers

Working as a freelancer on Upwork is a long-term process. It starts with creating a free account and setting up a profile. Then, a freelancer will create a profile with their hourly rate, skills, and availability. After that, they can start searching for jobs that match their skills and apply to them. If a freelancer gets hired for a job, they will work on it and track their time using the Upwork Team App. Once the job is completed, the freelancer will be paid within 10 days (or 6 days for fixed-price jobs) after the client approves the work. This process is streamlined and efficient, making it easy for freelancers to find work and get paid.

Upwork for Clients

Working as a freelancer on Upwork is very easy. A freelancer creates a profile and a list of skills, including an estimated hourly rate and availability. After that, the freelancer only needs to wait for job offers. In this case, the freelancer does not need to wait for a long time. They can continue to work on other projects or search for other jobs. The freelancer can also apply for specific jobs that match their skills. After the interview process, if the freelancer is selected, they can start working on the job. Upwork’s team management app tracks the time spent on the job and sends a screenshot every 10 minutes to ensure that the freelancer is working.

This eliminates the need for the freelancer to constantly prove that they are working. The app also allows for easy payment and tracking of earnings. Freelancers are typically paid every 10 days after the job is completed and in case of Milestone based payment freelancer will get payment after 6 days after the completion of the milestone.

Top 5 Competitors of Upwork

Upwork is popular among freelancers because it offers a wide range of job opportunities such as graphic design, software development, data entry, article writing, and SEO, among others. It is one of the largest freelance marketplaces in the world, but it is not the only one. There are other sites that also offer similar services to Upwork. Some of the best alternatives to Upwork are Fiverr, Freelancer, and PeoplePerHour and Guru .com.

  • Freelancer: Freelancer Porter is one of the world’s largest free lancing, outsourcing and crowd sourcing marketplaces. By using this site, clients can gain access to professional and efficient freelancers in fields such as software design, development, data entry, writing, and more.
  • Fiverr: Fiverr provides services and jobs for freelancers and companies. Its platform facilitates the buying and selling of online “gigs” or micro-jobs.
  • Peopleperhour: PeoplePerHour is a site similar to Odesk/Upwork. It offers freelancers to businesses worldwide. Its fee structure is less compared to staffing agencies. This site allows businesses to access home-based management and head services while working with freelancers, even remotely.
  • Guru: Guru.com helps companies find freelancers for their outsourced work. It provides a safe and secure platform for connecting with new clients. It has over 3 million freelancers, including those in web, software, IT, writing and translation, management and finance, engineering and architecture, design, art and multimedia, admin support and more.
  • 99Designs: 99Designs is a graphic design marketplace where businesses and individuals can find and work with freelance graphic designers to create custom designs for their projects. The platform allows clients to run design contests, where multiple designers compete to create the best design for the client’s project. Clients can then select the winning design and work with the designer to make revisions and finalize the project. 99Designs offers a wide range of design services including logo design, website design, packaging design, and more.

Importance of Upwork test

The importance of Upwork’s “Redesigned Test” is that it helps clients find the right freelancer for their project. This is particularly important for those who do not have a strong portfolio or a lot of feedback on the site. Feedback score, references from past clients, cover letter, job history and portfolio, and tests scores are all crucial for attracting clients. When a client views a freelancer’s profile, they usually check these things before scheduling an interview. Therefore, having good test scores is especially important for new freelancers on Upwork. Freelancers can add their test scores to their profile to make them more visible to clients. This can have a positive impact on clients.

Every platform has different pricing, so let me explain about Upwork pricing and payment methods.

Upwork pricing

Upwork does not support hourly contracts with rates lower than $3.00 USD per hour. For fixed-price contracts, the minimum payment is $5.00 USD. This means that freelancers should charge at least $3.00 per hour for hourly contracts and at least $5.00 for a project on fixed-price contracts.

Fixed-price contracts are fully determined by the client’s approval. In this type of contract, payment is agreed upon in a set amount. The issue with this type of payment is that the amount and timing of payment is solely determined by the client and Upwork/Odesk does not provide any guarantees for this type of payment. Therefore, freelancers should be cautious when working with a client under this type of payment method.

How much Upwork take?

Learn about what is upwork service fee. Upwork charges fees based on the freelancer’s earnings. This means that a percentage of the freelancer’s earnings goes towards Upwork’s fees. The exact fee percentage can vary depending on the freelancer’s account level and other factors.

  •  $0-$500 : 20% fee
  • $500.01-$10,000 : 10% fee
  • $10,000.01 : 5% fee or more

Typically, the higher the rate for a contract, the lower the fees will be. However, this is not always the case.

For example, if you have a contract with a client for $5500, Upwork will charge a fee of 10% on the first $5000 and 10% on the remaining $500. It’s also worth noting that these fees are subject to change and can vary based on your account plan (Basic or Plus).

How much time take Upwork take to pay?

There are various factors that can affect how quickly payment is processed on Upwork. Some examples include the agreement terms between the freelancer and client, the payment method used, and any issues that may arise during the withdrawal process. Additionally, Upwork may also have certain policies and procedures in place that can affect the timing of payments.

On Upwork, if you have a project that will take one week to complete, you can bill your client on a weekly basis. After your client approves your work, you will have 10 days to request a payment through this schedule.

If your contract is on a fixed-price basis, payment will be released to you five days after the work has been marked as completed by your client, as agreed upon between you and the client.

In addition, (and this is very good) Upwork also gives freelancers the option to receive bonus payments if they are particularly satisfied with their work. This works similarly to fixed-price payments, where you are given a five-day protection period before the bonus can be released.

Ultimately, once you become eligible for payout, the time it takes for you to receive your payment will depend on the method of withdrawal you choose, such as wire transfer or PayPal, and any additional processing time may apply depending on the method.

You can either manually withdraw your earnings or set up automatic payment schedule.

Upwork Payment Methods

  1. Paypal
  2. Payoneer Master Card
  3. Local Bank Transfer
  4. Wire Transfer

Funds can be withdrawn in multiple ways. It is recommended to have at least two methods of withdrawal in case of any issues with the first method. Setting up withdrawal methods before starting a contract is essential as the process of withdrawing can take several days. Upwork has rules for withdrawing funds. The availability of withdrawal methods depends on the freelancer’s country. ACH and PayPal are reliable and approved methods of withdrawal if they are available in the freelancer’s country. All withdrawal options are available under Settings>>Get Paid>>Payment Methods.

Many things have their advantages and disadvantages. So I am going to explain some pros and cons of Upwork.

Advantages and disadvantages of Upwork

Pros of Upwork?

  • Easy to find jobs and clients
  • Handling contract, billing, invoicing and mediation
  • Making ton of money on platform

Easy to find jobs and clients

Every new freelancer has asked themselves this question at some point: Where can I find new clients? And it’s probably safe to say that many freelancers have experienced how difficult it can be to find quality clients.

Cold calls and cold emails often take up a lot of time with very little pay off.

The same can be said for social media.

And when you have a limited time frame for your work, networking becomes impossible.

Focusing on jobs that match your specific skill set, rather than general job postings, is a more effective way to find work, especially for popular freelancer fields such as:

  1. Web and mobile development
  2. Writing and content creation
  3. Digital marketing
  4. Graphic design
  5. Data entry and research
  6. Translation and language services
  7. Customer service and support
  8. Virtual assistance
  9. Accounting and bookkeeping
  10. Video and animation production

New clients are added daily on platforms like Upwork, and new job listings are posted every minute on these platforms, which are ready to hire for freelancer.

You don’t need to convince them that they need your services, you need to tell them about the benefits of hiring a freelancer with specific skill set, who can handle the work efficiently. They already know that they need a specialist, you just need to show them how you are the right fit for the job.

You just need to convince them that you are the best candidate for that specific project or job posting.

And when this task becomes easier with a little effort and preparation, sending proposals and networking through job listings can become a more effective way of getting hired.

Handling contract, billing, invoicing and mediation

Another issue that often causes concern for freelancers is handling contracts, billing, invoicing, and dealing with third parties (which can sometimes go wrong).

This task can be especially challenging for new freelancers. And it can be overwhelming.

For example, when I am not freelancing on Upwork, I use Fiverr Workspace to handle my invoicing and payments, which costs $250 per year. I also use a lawyer to handle my contracts for $500 per year, and I pay fees to payment processors such as PayPal and Stripe.

It is important to note that even with the help of these platforms, there are still many manual tasks involved.

It is important to note that even with the help of these platforms, there are still many manual tasks involved, such as drafting and reviewing contracts, invoicing, and handling payments. It’s also worth considering that these platforms may charge fees for their services, which can add up over time.

This is why, in my opinion, one of the biggest advantages of using Upwork is that it handles all of those back-end tasks for you. The platform takes care of handling contracts, invoicing, and payments, which can save freelancers time and effort.

what is upwork proposal, This is Your job proposals (also messages sent through the Upwork messenger) generally serve as the basis for your contracts.

Upwork also helps with collecting payments, bank deposits and even preparing your 1099 forms (if applicable).

And if any disputes arise with your client, Upwork has a customer service team available to assist. They can mediate between you and the client and if an agreement cannot be reached, they can even escalate the matter to a third party.

Making ton of money on platform

As a SEO Optimized content writer, it is possible to earn more than $50,000 per year on Upwork by charging a rate of $75 per hour. However, it is important to note that earning potential on Upwork can vary greatly depending on factors such as competition, skill level, and the specific projects and clients you are able to secure. It’s always a good idea to research the market and set your rates according to what is reasonable and competitive for your industry and location.

Cons of Upwork

  • Pay to play
  • Upwork commission fee
  • Keep you clients on platform for two years

Pay to play

In recent years, freelancers have been able to take on more and more projects on their own terms, whether they want to work full-time or part-time.

However, this has created problems for platforms like Upwork.

In the past years, freelancers were able to bid on more and more jobs for free. But this caused problems for platforms like Upwork as there were many more unqualified, inexperienced candidates applying for the jobs.

Many Upwork freelancers apply to job posts without reading them properly or considering if the job is a good fit for them, resulting in many irrelevant or unqualified applications.

This was frustrating for many reasons, as you can imagine.

The main issue was that it resulted in an inefficient process of selecting clients (and finding the right freelancer) as a lot of time was wasted due to a large number of irrelevant freelancers applying for the job.

Upwork introduced “Connects” in May 2019, to address this issue.

Most people also want know about what is upwork connects. Upwork Connects essentially acts as a digital internal currency or credit system within the platform.

Currently, freelancers are required to spend 1-6 Connects for every proposal they submit, depending on the size of the job.

This means that freelancers have to be selective when submitting proposals, as each proposal comes with a cost in the form of Connects.

As of the current time, Upwork Connects are sold at a cost of $0.15 each and are available in packages of 10, 20, 40, 60 and 80 for those who wish to purchase them in bulk.

While Upwork gives all new users 40 free Connects to start with, most new Upwork users quickly exhaust this initial allotment and end up buying more.

Now, here’s some good news – you don’t have to spend any Connects to apply for jobs that you’ve been invited to. And, on the platform, more senior freelancers (who have more experience) tend to only respond to invitations and carefully review job feeds over time.

And the longer you stay on the platform, the more invitations you will receive. Personally, I haven’t used or purchased any Connects in years.

In addition, whenever you get an interview, you will receive free Connects. The more interviews you get, the more Connects you will accumulate.

The bottom line is that most of these costs will be incurred in the initial days of your time on the platform, when you are not getting many invites and not sending many proposals, hence not receiving many Connects. As you become more active and your invite and proposal count increases, you will likely earn more Connects.

Upwork commission fee

The next topic to be discussed is the prevalent criticism regarding Upwork – the platform’s charges.

At the end of today topic, Upwork is a business. They have business expenses that need to be covered, and one way they do that is by charging fees to freelancers and taking a percentage of the earnings.

Upwork charges commission fees for using their platform. These fees are a part of their business expenses and are used to maintain and improve the platform for both freelancers and clients.

Upwork charges a commission fee of 20% for the first $500 earned with a client and 10% for every dollar earned thereafter.

That is why I always recommend that Upwork workers focus on long-term contracts – with lower fees and more predictable, stable income.

Keep you clients on platform for two years

Are you looking to completely avoid Upwork fees? No worries, after a few years you’ll have the option to move your clients off the platform and work with them directly, which will allow you to avoid fees altogether.

However, without the added fees for transactions, quickly moving your clients off the platform (estimated annual income for Upwork freelancers is around 12%) can result in a loss of independence for your account.

Although it may seem unjust, I always recommend not to alienate the source of your income. Two years will pass by quickly before you know it.

In summary, Upwork platform has three major benefits and drawbacks – at least in my opinion.

Upwork help and supports

Upwork offers its users the best collaboration. It is a safe and secure platform that allows freelancers to fully focus on their work and earn money freely. The platform provides assurance of payment to the team management app and also provides assurance to clients that the freelancer is earning their due payment. Upwork also provides working guides to new freelancers.

Upwork is the world’s largest and most popular freelancing website. Although it has some drawbacks, its benefits make it a top choice. Its work system, payment method, tests, and best customer support make it stand out above all other freelancing sites and attract both clients and freelancers.
